ABSTRACT

The society leading to the XXI Century requires highly formed graduates which have to be prepared to adapt to forthcoming changes. This has led us to open the doors of university education so that students and teachers become familiar with the reality of other countries in order to broaden their knowledge. Today, many goals have been achieved through international co-operation programmes such as Socrates-Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, ALFA, EC-USA, EC-Canada, etc. but, without any doubt, there is still a long way to go and a lot remains to be done. Collaboration among universities from different countries must be encouraged, aiming to bring different cultures and languages closer together in order to better understand their diversity and try to overcome physical boundaries. Mr Martinez will speak about the present day situation in the field of international relations among universities and will open a debating forum concerning actions to be taken by higher education in the future.
