The Workshop

The "Information Age" presents a challenge to both university and corporate groups engaged in distributed learning and research activities. The diverse populations to be served, their unique needs, the "Knowledge Explosion", and the proliferation of technologies all represent significant challenges. Fortunately, we are beginning to realize that we don't need to do it all alone, and that effective partnering is a key way to turn these challenges into opportunities. In fact, one of the great promises of distributed learning and research collaboration is the opportunity for partnerships between diverse organizations that can produce outcomes superior to that which any group can do on their own. In an era of global interdependencies, these partnerships can help address the urgent need for promoting a new kind of global citizenship. However, partnerships should be formed strategically with careful thought to their value and return to all parties. Too often we engage in "opportunity-chasing" as opposed to the development of mindful and strategic alliances.

In this interactive, hands-on workshop, we will start with presentation of a "blueprint" for effective partnering - a model designed to evaluate partner opportunities, establish selection criteria, and apply a tool to guide partnership formation. A panel of international university and corporate representatives then will react to the model based on their real-world experience. Participants will have the opportunity to work individually and in small groups to apply the model to their own situations.

This workshop continues the series of pre-conference partnership workshop scheduled at ICEE every year. It will conclude in time for the welcome reception for ICEE-2003 scheduled for the same day.
