e-MAIL FROM iNEER/ICEE SECRETARY GENERAL
NOVEMBER 2, 2000

Dear Colleague:

I am pleased to forward the following information relating to engineering education in the global context.

First, ICEE-2000 was successfully convened in Taiwan in August this year. In attendance were approximately 350 delagates from 25 countries in attendance. Close to 70 of the delegates were from the U.S. Three keynote speakers, including two sitting presidents or a past chancellor of major universities (J.S. Jackson - Southern Illinois U.; S. Fenster - NJIT; C.L. Tien - UC/Berkeley). I congratulate Prof. C.Y. Chang, President, and Prof. C.H. Wei, Vice President, National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, respectively General Chair and Program Chair, and members of their hardworking committees, for a job well done. Attached is some of the feedback I have received. If you attended the conference and would like to provide feedback and have not done so, please contact me.

On behalf of ICEE-ISC and iNEER (http://www.ineer.org) it was an honor and a privilege for me to present them with the International Leadership Award and the International Achievement Award, respectively, during the conference banquet on August 14, 2000. More details will be posted on the iNEER website.

Next year, the ICEE community will assemble in Oslo, Norway during August 6-10, 2001 to review progress and seed new partnerships. I hope you can find time to join your colleagues there. General information about the conference, including abstract submission, may be obtained from: http://www-pors.hit.no/tf/icee01/. About 400 attendees are expected. Information about recent conferences, including proceedings, may be obtained from the following websites:

ICEE 1997: Chicago/Carbondale (250): http://www.siu.edu/~coalctr/icee2.htm

ICEE 1998: Rio de Janeiro (550): http://www.ctc.puc-rio.br/icee-98

ICEE 1999: Ostrava/Prague (400): http://www.fs.vsb.cz/akce/1999/icee99/welcome.htm

ICEE 2000: Taipei/Tainan (350): http://icee2000.nctu.edu.tw

Future conferences are: ICEE-2002: Manchester, UK; ICEE-2003: Valencia, Spain; ICEE-2004: Florida, USA. Other venues being proposed include Poland, Argentina, South Korea, Puerto Rico, and Virginia.

Following the ICEE tradition (see the iNEER website), the first part of ICEE-2001 will focus on invited talks and contributed papers. The second part will concern the development of collaborative international partnerships. Currently, the following partnership workshops are being considered by the organizing committees:

  1. Workshop/Panel on Accreditation and International Standards
  2. Workshop on Distance Education Related to International Collaboration
  3. USA-Scandinavia Bilateral Workshop on Research and Education
  4. USA-Czech Republic-Poland Trilateral Workshop on Future Cooperation in Education and Research
  5. USA-Taiwan-Korea Trilateral Workshop on Future Cooperation

If you wish to suggest topics for other workshops, help with session planning and organization, or just have questions or comments to help out, I would be pleased to hear from you.

From time to time, I will be forwarding other information related to international engineering education using this mail-list that goes out to about 2,000 individuals around the world. If your name has been included inadverdently and your current professional and/or personal interests fall outside of the afore-mentioned area, please let me know so I may remove your name from the list, and apologize for the inconvenience to you. By the same token, if you think of individuals to whom we ought to send this, please give me their names and e-mail addresses. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Win Aung, Ph.D., Dr.h.c., P.E.
