For centuries Taiwan has been familiar to the world as Formosa, derived from the Portuguese "Ilha Formosa" (Beautiful Island). Shaped roughly like a tobacco leaf, Taiwan's located between two major climatic zones. Its diverse topography has endowed the island with a wide range of flora and fauna.
Taiwan is situated in the Pacific Ocean about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland. Located about midway between Korea and Japan to the north and Hong Kong and the Philippines to the south, Taiwan is a natural gateway for travelers to and within Asia.
About two-thirds of the island is covered with lushly forested mountains, including the highest peak in Northeast Asia, Jade Mountain, at 3,950 meters above sea level. The natural bounty of beauty includes sun splashed beaches and tranquil lakes, gushing waterfalls and soothing hot-springs, and an exotic array of tropical flora and fauna.
With a population of 20 million people, Taiwan is one of the most densely populated pieces of land on earth. About 2.7 million of those people live in Taipei City and another 323,000 are ethnic aborigines who live in remote mountain villages. The majority of Taiwan's Chinese populace traces its ancestry back to Fukien province in mainland China.
Traditional Chinese arts and crafts still flourish in Taiwan today. Calligraphy and painting, martial and medical arts, philosophy and religion, and the sublime culinary arts of classical Chinese cuisine continue to thrive and develop here, giving Taiwan a traditional Chinese ambiance that is impossible to find anywhere else in the world today.

Taipei, capital of the Republic of China. is well known as a regional business center. It is in northern Taiwan and rests in a basin surrounded by mountains and crisscrossed by rivers. With 2.7 million residents in an area of 27,177 hectares (67,942 acres), Taipei City has a fairly dense population. Taiwan's "economic miracle" has put a modern face on Taipei and its people. But Taipei is still Chinese at heart, with an underlying current of traditional lifestyles and culture that makes it fascinating for travelers. Taipei is truly a city of many faces, where ancient and modern coexist.
Tainan, the ancient capital of Taiwan, is situated on the southwestern coastal plains of the island and enjoys a warm climate year-round. It is the island's oldest and now fourth largest city, with a population in excess of 700,000. The gentle-natured people of the city are warmly hospitable, and the relatively tranquil life there seems far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern urban life. With its long history, Tainan is rich in historic sites and cultural heritage.

| Along the Tamsui River, you'll visit the old seaside town of Tamsui on north Taiwan. Fort San Domingo, known in Chinese as the
"Fort of the red-hair barbarians" built by Spanish in 1629, occupied by the Dutch in 1642, and captured by the Chinese in 1661. The Chinese leased the Fort to the British in 1867 and it was bombarded by the French in 1884. An easy stroll through the streets offers you a chance to examine the old town in Taiwan. Next, you'll stop at Kuantu Temple, one of the three largest palaces on the island. The temple houses images of the goddess of Matsu and other gods venerated in Chinesefolk beliefs.
